My new tattoo, a little heart my dad drew, and my new macrame project. ❤️

I’m writing this exactly one year after my dad passed away. It was May 27th, 2025. Earlier this month when we were all together in Finland for my niece’s christening, my three sisters, my mom, and I, we all got tattoos of hearts that my dad drew for us. In March last year we asked him to draw us hearts, and then we told him we were going to get them as tattoos. His reaction was, “Why didn’t you tell me sooner? I would have drawn them better.” Bless. But they were perfect exactly as they were. Hand drawn, squiggly lines, a little wobbly. Done with a relaxed hand, without the pressure of perfection. That’s what made them real.

A year of grief has become a year of new life. My sister got married last summer. Her daughter was just christened. We marked this one-year anniversary month of dad’s death with tears and tattoos and with new beginnings. With hearts that dad drew, that we’ll carry with us forever.

While I was editing my new macrame tutorial this week, my dad’s heart on my hand is visible in every frame. I’m there, creating, teaching, and dad is right there with me in every shot. His heart, literally visible on my hand as I tie knots and share macrame. From now on, he’ll be in every video I make. Every tutorial I create, he’s creating with me too. 💛

Some reflections on the busyness of life… This month surprised me in one unexpected way: I noticed how much I craved slowing down. The macrame retreat with Laura @drawingknots was exactly what I needed. Those long days with my hands moving and my mind settling reminded me of something I’d figured out back in January and February. I had it then: time to just be and breathe.

Somewhere between March and April, I filled my calendar again. Weekends got booked. Days got planned and I felt there was no time for anything. Does this resonate with anyone else? Do you find yourself doing the same? Here’s the lesson I’m relearning: I need to make less plans and leave room for last-minute ideas and activities instead. Something I’m noticing about myself (and maybe you too?) is how quickly we fill the space we create.

The macrame retreat I went on didn’t shift how I think about my work so much as it reinforced what I already know I want. I want to make with people. I want to organise workshops and maybe even plan weekend retreats myself, to create these moments where we just are. And, I want to be a student again. I want to attend craft workshops, learn new things, show up as someone curious instead of always being the one who teaches. I’m curious if anyone else craves that shift: from being the expert to being the learner?

So, if there’s one small thing I’m carrying into May, that is slowing down. That feeling of calm that comes when you’re not rushing. When you just are. Your breath calms down and your nervous system relaxes. It’s worth protecting. If you’ve ever felt that shift, you know what I mean. ✨

Making macrame with other people is completely dif

Making macrame with other people is completely different than making alone. 🍀

I usually design as I make, measuring, calculating, deciding. But this time, I followed someone else’s pattern (thank you Laura!). A big chandelier with long tassels that took the whole weekend to unfold. And I wanted to just follow. Just be present. Just knot. 🥰

Usually when I’m making at home, I have a podcast on or a book playing. But this was different. There was music, and conversation, and laughter about life and love and everything in between. Nine of us in the nature of southern Spain, and somehow in the middle of all that togetherness, I found the quietest part of my own mind.

That’s what surprised me. That being with people would feel meditative. That not designing would feel like rest. That making together would be so different from making alone.

If you’ve ever wanted to take a craft class, or go on a creative retreat, or just sit down with friends and make something, anything, do it. Your hands do the work, but your whole self gets to settle in the relaxing company. And when you’re surrounded by kind people, all doing the same thing, it becomes something else entirely. 💛

This is what community feels like. It felt like home. So much gratitude to Laura @drawingknots for bringing us all together and making this happen, to @lasiestadelnaranjo for the most beautiful space and such generous hosting, and to all my new friends. Making with you these three days was everything. ✨

New tutorial drop! ✨ Say hello to the Nova necklac

New tutorial drop! ✨ Say hello to the Nova necklace, a macrame statement necklace made from t-shirt yarn and golden tube beads. It looks like it took way more effort than it actually did, which is my favourite kind of project!

What you need to know:
- Beginner friendly project
- Takes about 30 to 45 minutes
- We’re using just two knots!

And you can really make this necklace your own: swap the gold beads for any colour or shape, use cotton cord instead of t-shirt yarn, or make it with kids using pasta tubes as beads! 🍝 And maybe dye the macaroni first?? So fun!
