My first ever macrame plant hanger tutorial is here! ENJOY. (I don’t think you can count the COCOON, as that one is more like a little mini air plant home, no?)
This super simple & very Scandinavian macrame plant hanger tutorial is suitable for all levels of macrame makers out there, both beginners and more advanced knotters alike. It’s a quick and fun make!
And what’s even better, this macrame plant hanger fits a variety of different pot sizes – 10, 15, 25cm circumference, you name it, it will fit & it will look amazing.
Materials & Tools
First things first. If you’re a complete beginner, I recommend you check out my BEGINNER to MACRAME blog post first for the basic knots and terminology.
For this simple macrame plant hanger you’ll need to get the following supplies before you start knotting.
- 6 meters (about 6.5 yd) of 5mm braided* cord. I used Bobbiny’s 5mm braided* cord in “natural” color.
- 13.5 meters (about 14.8 yd) of 2.5mm single strand cord. I chose Lankava’s Minimop cord, in “light brown” color.
- Wooden ring. The one I used is about 5cm (2 in) in width.
I encourage you to give the plant hanger your own personal touch and pick your own colors, or use other cords of similar thicknesses if you prefer, and adjust the length according to your taste.
*Note: if you would like to brush out the “tail” of the plant hanger, do not use a braided cord, but a single strand or 3 ply cord.
You should also have at hand the following tools:
- Scissors
- Tape measure
- A way to hang your work
I used an S hook and a clothing rack to hang my work while knotting. You could also use a hook on the wall, or do your knotting on the table with a paperweight, or tape your cords to the table to hold them still.

Attach the wooden ring
Start by cutting your 6 meters (6.5 yd) of the braided cord into three equal pieces of 2 meters.
Grab all three pieces and fold them in half.
Tie the fold onto the wooden ring with a lark’s head knot. In the below sections I refer to these cords as “hanging cords”.
In case you need a reminder of the lark’s head knot, here below is a demo video and this blog post has photos. You’ll need the first version that’s shown in the video.
A little POP of COLOR for the sides
Cut a 4 meter piece (approx 160 in) of the 2.5mm single strand cord and fold it in half. From now on I will refer to this cord as the accent cord.
Grab two of your hanging cords and measure 40cm down from the wooden ring.
Place the fold of your accent cord behind the two hanging cords at the 40cm mark and start making square knots with the accent cord around the hanging cords.
Do you need a reminder of how to make the square knot? You can either:

Keep making square knots until you’ve finished your accent cord. Leave at least 5cm of accent cord untied.
Repeat this section two more times around the other four hanging cords. Do not “finish” the accent cord in any way, but leave it hanging once you are done with your knotting. You’ll hide the cord ends inside the gathering knot at the end.
Make sure the three strands of square knots all end at the same height.
Wrapping things up
with a gathering knot!
Once you’ve finished the three strands of square knots, bring the hanging cords and the ends of the accent cords together into a bundle. Make sure the bottom square knots are all at the same height.
Cut 1.5 meters (around 60 in) of the accent cord.
Make a gathering knot with it around the hanging cords and the accent cord ends. I recommend making your gathering knot at least 5cm tall (2 in) to make sure it holds.
Cut the accent cords at the end of your gathering knot and, if needed, move the gathering knot slightly to cover the ends.

You’re almost done!
The very last thing you need to do is finishing off the “tail”.
You should now have six hanging cords coming out of your gathering knot. You could leave them the way they are, trim them all to the same length, or do a double overhand knot at the end of all of them, as a little extra decor. The knot is illustrated at the end of the video tutorial, at minute 16.08.
That’s it! How easy was that? Now all that is left is selecting which plant gets to hang in it’s new forever home!

Hmm is anyone else encountering problems with the images on this
blog loading? I’m trying to determine if its a problem on my end or if it’s the blog.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Ah, I’m sorry about that! Were the images just slow to load or they didn’t appear at all? I’ve sent the url now to a few other people to see what they say. My wifi is so slow on every single page on the internet that it’s hard for me to judge. 😅 But I do see the images. Thank you so much for signalling this nonetheless, I very much appreciate!
