How do I get started with macrame?
If you’re completely new to macrame, I recommend you start by reading this blog post first: Macrame for beginners & 5 basic macrame knots. It will cover the basics you should know before you start your macrame adventure.

But now, let’s get started on that Christmas spirit!
DIY Macrame Christmas Star
Difficulty level: Easy
Time needed: 1-2 hours
This macrame Christmas star can be used as a Christmas tree decoration or as a part of your table decor. You can choose to use it as a coaster or simply sprinkle many of them around your table to create a real Christmas wonderland mood!
Check out the materials you need below and press play on the video!
Materials needed
The macrame star is simple to make and thus the materials needed for it are not many either!
All you need is:
- 6.25 meters of 5mm thick single strand cord
- Wooden ring (I used one that was 5.5cm circumference, 0.8mm thick edges)*
PRO TIPS: You can make the star with less cord, but I recommend to have at least a fistful of cord at the end to tie the last knots. It’s easier and makes a more beautiful result.
*You can use any other type of ring of equal dimensions. Or you can use cord if you do not like the rigid center.
Optionally you can add some metallic thread to mix in with the cord for some extra oomph, like I did in the photos! Bobbiny is one of my favorite macrame cord suppliers and they do some gorgeous metallic macrame cords every year (usually seasonally around Christmas).
Tools needed
For this macrame Christmas star you’ll need to have the following tools:
- Scissors (the sharper the better!)
- Tape measure
- Paperweight (or another way to prevent the work from moving, either on the table or hanging)
Dimensions of the finished star
If you follow the above instructions to the T, your finished star should be about 14cm wide. If you prefer a longer or shorter fringe than your star’s size will of course differ.
